Strasbourg, 14.04.2010 – The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has issued today its third annual report on the supervision of the execution of judgments of the European Court of Human Rights.
In 2009 1515 new judgments finding violations of the European Convention on Human Rights were brought before the Committee of Ministers for supervision of their execution, thus bringing the number of cases under supervision to 7 881. The compensation awarded to the victims in the new judgments 2009 amounted to some 54 million Euros. In their introductory remarks to the report, the successive Chairs of the Committee of Ministers’ special human rights meetings in 2009 stress the increasing burden faced by the Committee of Ministers, the responses under way as well as the reflections engaged, notably in the wake of the High Level Conference in Interlaken in February 2010 on the future of the European Court.
Safeguarding media freedom in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine – Conference in Tbilisi
Date: 15-16 April 2010 Location: Tbilisi Marriott Hotel, 13 Rustaveli Av., Tbilisi (Georgia) Organised by the Council of Europe, in the framework of the 2009-2010 Swiss chairmanship of its Committee of Ministers Description: Public officials, parliamentarians, media professionals and representatives of NGOs will debate the safety and protection of journalists, the challenges to freedom of expression and the changes in the media brought by new technologies. The aim of the event is to discuss how to further promote freedom of expression and information in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine in line with Council of Europe standards and recommendations.
Strasbourg, 01.04.2010 – Josette Durrieu (France, SOC) and Egidijus Vareikis (Lithuania, EPP/CD), co-rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) for monitoring the honouring of obligations and commitments by Moldova, will be making a fact-finding visit to Chisinau on 5-6 April. During this visit, the co-rapporteurs are due to meet the Acting President of the Republic and Speaker of Parliament Mihai Ghimpu, the Prime Minister Vlad Filat and the leaders of the parliamentary parties.Meetings are also scheduled with the Prosecutor General, the parliamentary enquiry committee on the events of April 2009, the working group on constitutional reform and the parliamentary committee on amendments to Article 78 of the Constitution.
Acting President Ghimpu and the co-rapporteurs will hold a joint press conference on Tuesday 6 April at 8 p.m. at the Ministry of Agriculture Building in Chisinau.
