Council of Europe seriously concerned about the Vardanyan caseStrasbourg, 22.12.2010 – “The Council of Europe is seriously concerned about the fate of the journalist Ernest Vardanyan, the circumstances of his trial and the very harsh sentence imposed in the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova. Since his arrest in Tiraspol in April this year, the Council of Europe has been following the case of Mr Vardanyan and will continue to do so,” said today Council of Europe Deputy Secretary General Maud de Boer-Buquicchio. The trial of Mr Vardanyan comes at a time of increasing Council of Europe engagement aimed at building confidence across the Dniester/Nistru river. The Council of Europe is prepared to continue this engagement, but we would also expect it to be accompanied by tangible progress, for the benefit of all the people living in the Transnistrian region, in the respect of Council of Europe standards of democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
