Election of the Moldovan President : 'high time for the parliament to deliver'
Strasbourg, 05.12.2011 – Returning from their fact-finding visit to Moldova (28 November-1st December 2011), PACE co-rapporteurs Lise Christoffersen (Norway, SOC) and Piotr Wach (Poland, EPP/CD) welcomed the decision of the Moldovan parliament to set the date of the election of the President on 16 December 2011.
"The Moldovan parliament has the power to put an end to a political deadlock lasting for more than 800 days. We urge leaders of all political parties to reach a compromise, find the required qualified majority and elect the President of the Republic. This election is needed to comply with the Constitution, secure the separation of powers, speed up a much-needed reform process, promote an inclusive, multicultural society and attract foreign investors. Political responsibility and accountability is today required to meet the needs of the Moldovan citizens, face Moldova's many challenges, and ensure that democratic reforms be effectively implemented to the benefit of the population", said the PACE co-rapporteurs.
"We believe that Moldova is on the right track to fulfill Council of Europe obligations and commitments. The adoption of the strategy for the reform of the justice system on 25 November 2011, the on-going proposals to combat corruption, reform the police and the prosecution service and decentralize the country demonstrate the political will of the Moldovan authorities for further European integration. This good will however needs to be translated in concrete, tangible measures. It is high time for the parliament and the authorities to deliver", added the co-rapporteurs.
Lise Christoffersen and Piotr Wach had a series of meetings with the acting President of the Republic and Speaker of Parliament, the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and European Integration, the Minister of Justice, the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, the Moldovan delegation to the PACE, representatives of the political parties and the judicial authorities, as well as NGOs and the media.
