Training on healthcare in prisons for penitentiary and civil sector staff
On 16-17 October 2014 the Confidence-Building Measures (CBMs) programme organised a training on “Healthcare in prisons” for the representatives of penitentiary institutions, TB coordinators from the civil sector, as well as representatives of NGOs working in the field of TB/HIV treatment and control in prisons from both banks of the river Nistru/Dniester.
The aim of the training was to raise the participants’ awareness of European standards in health care and medical ethics in places of detention, and their practical application in medical care of infectious diseases and mental health of prisoners.
The training was delivered by leading Council of Europe experts in the field of penitentiary practice. The participants learned about best practices on working with patients who refuse/abandon treatment for various reasons, including the side effects of anti-TB treatment. Particular attention was paid to medical ethics in prisons, infection control measures for penitentiary staff, prison management rules and control of infectious diseases in prisons in general.
