SECOND STEERING COMMITTEE MEETINGCouncil of Europe Project “Support to criminal Justice Reform in the Republic of Moldova” On 1 March, 2016 the second Steering Committee Meeting within the Council of Europe Project “Support to criminal justice reforms in the Republic of Moldova”, funded by the Government of Denmark (the Project) was organised. The purpose of the steering committee was to discuss the results achieved by the Project in 2015 and the prospects for the current year.
After the commencement, the Project was actively involved in the criminal justice reform process in the Republic of Moldova. During the first year of the implementation extensive expert assistance was provided to the long-awaited reform of the Public Prosecution Service (PPS) in line with European standards and best practices in view of preparation of a new law on PPS of Moldova. Another institution for the development of which the Project targeted its support was the Ombudsperson’s institution. Extensive assistance was channeled to assist the Ombudsperson’s institution in its capacity development in general and with the establishment and effective functioning of the National Preventive Mechanism (NPM), in accordance to OPCAT and other international and European standards. The detailed work plan of the implementation of the project for 2016 was discussed and endorsed by the steering committee. The activities for the 2nd year of the Project are built on the achievements of the 1st year, as well as the proprieties and political developments in the country. The Project will further support the realisation of meaningful reforms of the PPS by means of expertise and capacity enhancement activities. Further assistance will be provided for the establishment of the NPM and capacity enhancement of the Ombudsperson’s institution and bodies involved in the fight against ill-treatment and torture. |
